Review of the 2025-26 seed collection season
We have an amazing group of individuals with a variety of talents which when combined, make up a brilliant team. From morning tea to data entry and all the bush scrambling, winnowing and sorting in between, I thank you.
The work completed this season with our volunteers was:
- 8.4kg of processed seed delivered to South Gippsland Seed Bank
- 35 sites from public land and private property
- 56 species ready to regenerate our native bushland and new plantings in parks and gardens.
Our trickiest seed this season was the Cassinia aculeata (Common Dogwood) which was hit with high temps while flowering and ‘cooked’, preventing many from ripening.
Acacias and eucalypts had a good season and seeded well. Our increased number of team members allows for greater collecting capacity.
Thanks to all our office bearers who do such a great job. Everyone contributes so no one is left floundering or feeling under-appreciated, and the social network we have developed cannot be overlooked. People’s talents are recognised and nurtured, so we are learning from each other all the time.
We are consistently working to improve our facilities which takes time and effort and will eventually come to fruition.
Our connection to Landcare has been increased with our team supporting at Farm World, creating learning activities to be available for schools and closer contact with our local facilitator.
A team has planted Themeda triandra (Kangaroo Grass) in a garden bed here at the depot, to help ensure we will still be able to collect in the future. This will be supplemented by some Olearia phlogopappa (Dusty Daisy Bush) and perhaps some Goodia lotifolia (Golden Tip).
A well-earned winter rest will see us meeting for coffee, going on excursions and generally enjoying each other’s company while we plan for next season.
